The Wartime Escape of Curious George: Margret and H.A. Rey’s Journey From France
(Open to all ages)

Miami Beach Regional Library
227 22nd Street, Miami Beach

The exhibition will remain on display through March 17, 2018, during regular library hours:
Monday - Thursday: 10 a.m. - 8 p.m.
Friday - Sunday: 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.

Originally titled The Adventures of Fifi, the series of books that chronicle the mischievous adventures of Curious George have been a favorite of children all over the world for decades. However, few people know about the incredible journey of his creators, Margret and H.A. Rey, German Jewish refugees who were forced to flee Paris along with thousands of other refugees in June 1940. The original Curious George manuscript was among the few possessions the Reys managed to take with them as they rode their bicycles south toward freedom on a five-month journey that would take them to Spain, Portugal, Brazil and eventually New York.

Told via a series of beautiful watercolors, the exhibition explores the Reys’ early creative collaborations and their escape from France, while tracing the story of how Curious George himself spanned the wartime period.

Group visits: Free tours of the exhibition are available for classroom field trips, as well as synagogue, church and community groups. Please email: dreed@gmjf.org or call 305.538.1663 to make a reservation.

Developed by the Institute for Holocaust Education of the Jewish Federation of Omaha. The Holocaust Memorial is pleased to host the South Florida premiere of this intriguing exhibition.

Fifty-six years ago, Adolf Eichmann, who had been in charge of transporting millions of European Jews to death camps, sat in a courtroom, in a bulletproof box, for a trial that would bring to light the horrific details of the Holocaust.

Operation Finale — the code name of Israel’s effort to locate him — reveals exactly how Mossad agents found Eichmann in his hiding place in South America, and how they abducted and smuggled him safely to Israel to stand trial. Using recently declassified artifacts from the Mossad, Israel’s Secret Intelligence Service, the exhibition is the first in the United States to fully document the pursuit, capture, extradition and trial of a Nazi war criminal. Original 1960s-era ephemera, Telly Award-winning films and audio, and contemporary design elements tell the story of espionage, intrigue, and ultimately, justice served. Before 1961, the world showed little interest in Holocaust survivors. After Eichmann’s trial, survivors were emboldened to tell their stories and the world could no longer deny the atrocities of what happened.

Operation Finale is presented by The Florida Holocaust Museum, and co-produced by The Mossad; Beit Hatfutsot – The Museum of the Jewish People, in Tel Aviv, Israel; and the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage, in Cleveland, OH.
